Fuzzy: Gard Nilssen Acoustic Unity and Gabriela Garrubo Trio!
Moldejazz continues to unveil concerts at "new" venues and this time invites you to the neighbor right across the street from Plassen, Fuzzy Platebar. If Molde has a Berlin, it's found in the basement of this venue located at Storgata 13. In a space that has housed everything from a shoemaker to a clothing store, Moldejazz, in collaboration with Fuzzy, presents two concerts during the festival week. First up is Gard Nilssen Acoustic Unity on Monday, followed by the Gabriela Garrubo Trio on the festival's final day, Saturday.
Two New Concerts at a New Venue!
We are very proud to have young people from the region on board this year to book for the festival - Programråd UNG. They consist of music students from Ålesund VGS, Atlanten VGS, Volda VGS, and the national Jazz Program at Molde VGS. These young people, under the leadership of second-year student Jørund Solli Os, have been given free rein to influence the programming of this year's festival, and they have chosen Gard Nilssen Acoustic Unity. The concert will be performed acoustically and without amplification.
"We were thrilled when we were informed that Gard Nilssen Acoustic Unity was possible to book. It's a concert we're looking forward to in this year's program, and we hope more people will enjoy the music of this group," says the leader of Programråd UNG, Jørund Solli Os.
Moldejazz continues to spread throughout Molde. Welcome through a door and down a staircase to Molde's Berlin during this year's festival. We promise you a great atmosphere at this year's third "new" venue, Fuzzy Platebar in Storgata.
Gard Nilssen Acoustic Unity
Program Council UNG describes the band as an "uptempo funky national jazz trio," which is actually quite an appropriate characterization. It's exuberant music
It's rare for a year to pass without seeing Gard Nilssen at Moldejazz, so it's no coincidence that the Program Council UNG – our own youth program council – has chosen Gard Nilssen’s Acoustic Unity as their dream booking. At the same time, there will be a world premiere of Fuzzy record bar as a concert venue.
Nilssen's frequent presence at Moldejazz has exposed many young jazz enthusiasts to his multitude of projects. He is, quite literally, all over the musical map.
Just this year, he is performing a duo concert with Bill Frisell, playing with Susanne Sundfør at Romsdals Museum, and participating in the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra with Bill Frisell. In the past, he has curated the festival celebration of Jon Christensen, "Jon's House," and in 2019, he was the Artist in Residence.
A stream of movement-inducing, life-giving sound, channeled by three musicians who are each powerhouses in their own right, and together become nuclear. Not to mention they are good friends. This results in intriguing music.
And perhaps this is exactly what appeals to the young jazz enthusiasts. GNAU manages to convey traditional idioms without compromising personal style or energy. They capture the ear and sharpen it, making it impossible not to pay attention. One becomes eager to find out what's around the next corner, so to speak.
In 2019, the trio released the Spellemann-nominated album "To Whom Who Buys A Record" – a title that is both a lament for a bygone record industry and a postcard from music that still exists. It’s worth a listen before you settle in at Fuzzy this year.
André Roligheten – saxophone, Petter Eldh – bass, Gard Nilssen – drums.
Concerts in our main program typically last between 60 to 90 minutes.
This concert at Fuzzy has no age restriction.

Gabriela Garrubo Trio
Gabriela Garrubo is a Norwegian-Brazilian jazz singer with a background from the Grieg Academy in Bergen
Throughout 2021 and 2022, she has worked with producer Vetle Junker (Aurora, Verdensrommet, Metteson) to create her debut album "Rodando." Gabriela cleverly balances a modern and fresh (pop) sound that also evokes significant retro associations. She combines Scandinavian jazz and 80s Brazilian music, with lyrics in both English and Portuguese that deal with finding oneself and finding strength in a chaotic, unjust, and painful, yet also beautiful, world.
In recent years, Gabriela Garrubo has made a notable mark on the music scene in Bergen and Norway. After her performance at Vill Vill Vest in September 2021, BT’s reviewer gave her a 6/6 rating, elaborating: “The way she smoothly navigates through scales and alternates between soft tones and sharp bursts is mesmerizing.”
The music combines Scandinavian jazz and 80s Brazilian music. The lyrics, in both English and Portuguese, speak about self-discovery and finding strength in a chaotic, unjust, and painful, yet also beautiful, world.
Gabriela received the Vossa Jazz award for 2024. Read more about it here...
